Niacinamide: Does Your Routine Need It?
Niacinamide is easy to buy twice without noticing. It can be in your moisturizer, your sunscreen, and the serum you are considering because its percentage looks impressive. Before adding another bottle, check what your current routine already contains.
What the research actually tested
Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 used in topical skincare. In a randomized study, 50 white women with signs of facial photoaging used a 5% niacinamide formula on one side of the face and its vehicle on the other for 12 weeks. Researchers reported improvements in several measures of skin appearance.
That is useful evidence for the formula and study population. It does not show that every niacinamide product performs the same way, that a higher percentage works better, or that you will see a change overnight.
A bigger number is not a complete buying argument
A concentration tells you one thing about a product. It does not describe the entire formula, how comfortable it feels, or whether you will keep using it. A serum with a prominent percentage still needs to earn its place beside your existing moisturizer.
Start with a specific reason to consider it: a cosmetic concern you want to address and a formula you can tolerate. If your present products already contain niacinamide and work comfortably, another dedicated serum may be an optional purchase rather than a missing essential.
Choose a place in the routine, not a collection
Follow the product directions and introduce one new product at a time. That makes reactions and practical problems easier to trace. Burning or persistent redness is a reason to stop and reassess, not a sign that an ingredient is doing extra work.
A niacinamide product does not replace sunscreen or a treatment recommended for a diagnosed skin condition. If your goal is persistent acne or changing pigmentation, get advice about the problem itself rather than repeatedly increasing the strength of a cosmetic serum.
Before you buy
Read the ingredient lists of the products you own. Then ask whether the proposed bottle provides something distinct, at a price and texture that fit your routine. A useful ingredient can be part of a simple routine; it does not have to become a separate step.
